Saint Margaret School to Close in June 2025

In a letter emailed to parents of students in grades K-8 at Saint Margaret School in Reading, Father Juan Rodriguez, Parochial Administrator of Saint Margaret of Scotland Parish, which oversees the school, announced that the school will close at the end of the current school year, in June 2025.

In his letter, Father Rodriguez explained that Saint Margaret School has seen a steady decline in enrollment over the years, with a current total of 155 students in Grades K-8. Enrollment has dropped by 125 students since 2015 and by over 50 students since 2019, with a further decline projected for the upcoming school year. This decline has put considerable financial pressure on parish resources, as the parish has had to cover the school’s revenue shortfall to meet operating costs despite efforts to keep tuition affordable. Additionally, like many schools in the post-pandemic era, Saint Margaret’s has struggled with staffing shortages, often relying on substitute teachers, which has impacted the consistency and quality of education.

Catholic education will remain available to the students currently attending Saint Margaret School. Enclosed with the letter was information about Catholic Education Continuation Grants available for Saint Margaret families who want to continue their child’s education at another Catholic elementary school in the Diocese of Allentown. The first student in the family receives a $1,500 grant in the first year (2025-26) and $1,000 grant in the second year (2026-27). Second and third children in the family receive a $750 grant the first year (2025-26) and a $500 grant in the second year (2026-27). Information about neighboring Catholic elementary schools in Reading and Berks County was also included with the letter.

Father Rodriguez’ request to close the school was reviewed by the Diocesan Council of Priests and the Diocesan Board of Education, both of which recommended closure. After prayerful consideration and discernment, Diocese of Allentown Bishop Alfred A. Schlert regretfully accepted the recommendation.

Father Rodriguez concluded his letter to parents by saying, “While this news is undoubtably sad and signifies an unexpected transition for your family, it is my prayer that our students and families of Saint Margaret School will find a new start in one of the fine area Catholic schools in Reading and Berks County.”
