Diocesan faithful have taken Msgr. Edward O’Connor, pastor of St. Patrick, Pottsville, to more places than he could ever imagine this summer, and he is still traveling.
It may not be Msgr. O’Connor in the flesh but an image of him on a stick has been spotted as close as the Poconos and as far away as Spain.
The “Take Monsignor on a Stick on Vacation” contest is in full swing again after faithful snapped photos of him on stick with them on day trips, family vacations and at museums last summer.
Debbie Walker, administrative assistant at St. Patrick, said the parish came up with the idea as a fun way to connect better with children during the summer.
According to Walker, Msgr. O’Connor has accompanied faithful to places like St. Peter Square, Rome; Hawaii; and even a couple of U.S Air Force bases.
“He was also seen at baseball games, eating pizza, getting his haircut, going to see the fireworks, swimming and the Reading museum,” said Walker.
Bishop-elect Alfred Schlert didn’t leave Msgr. O’Connor behind either, and brought him along on retreat as he prepares to become the fifth bishop of Allentown.
Msgr. O’Connor also took trips to Italy; Stone Harbor, New Jersey; Emmitsburg, Maryland; and New York.
Despite constant traveling, Msgr. O’Connor is not ready to rest and is looking to squeeze in a few more trips before the end of summer.
Persons interested in taking him along on their summer trips or excursions can “pick up” Msgr. O’Connor at the parish office or call and request the cardboard image fastened to a stick.
As part of the contest, images must be emailed to the parish by Thursday, Aug. 31 to be eligible for the $50 grand prize.
Msgr. O’Connor can be picked up or requested at St. Patrick, 319 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, 570-622-1802. Images should be emailed to [email protected].
